Do I need a permit for a home EV charger?
Yes. Maryland has adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code statewide, and Article 625 covers electric vehicle charging equipment specifically. Calvert County requires an electrical permit for the circuit, and the work has to be done by a licensed Master or Journeyman electrician. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection as part of the job.
Will my electrical panel support a Level 2 charger?
It depends on the panel. Newer Calvert County homes with 200 amp service usually have room. A lot of older homes, especially ranchers built before the 1990s, still run 100 amp panels, and adding a 240V circuit for a charger can push that past a safe margin. We check your panel and do the load calculation before we quote the job, so you know which situation you are in up front.
How much does a Level 2 charger installation cost?
For a straightforward job on an existing panel with capacity to spare, expect $1,000 to $2,500 for hardware and labor. For most of Calvert County’s older single-family housing stock, the realistic number lands around $1,500 to $1,800. If your panel needs a service upgrade first, that climbs to $4,000 or more. Is there a Maryland rebate for home EV chargers?
Yes. Maryland’s residential EVSE rebate covers up to $700, or half the installed cost. The prior fiscal year’s $1.5 million budget for the program ran out by mid-April, months before the fiscal year ended, which tells you the demand is real. A new funding cycle opened July 1, 2026. We can walk you through eligibility and paperwork when we quote your job.
How long does an installation take?
The actual electrical work is usually a single day, sometimes a few hours, once the permit is approved. Getting the county permit issued typically adds a few business days on top of that. A panel upgrade, when one is needed, adds more time for equipment and scheduling with the utility.
Do you install chargers for every EV brand?
Yes. We install standard NEMA 14-50 outlets and hardwired Level 2 chargers that work with Tesla, Ford, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, GM, and every other major manufacturer’s home charging equipment. If you already own a charger, we can install it; if not, we can recommend one that fits your panel and your car.
Can you install chargers for a business or HOA?
Yes, and it is a different job than a home install: higher amperage circuits, sometimes multiple chargers on one panel, and coordination with the property owner or association on metering and access. Commercial and HOA jobs are quoted separately from residential work, based on a site visit.
Do you serve areas outside Calvert County?
Our home base is Calvert County, but St. Mary’s and Charles counties sit in the same SMECO utility territory and share the same housing patterns, so we take jobs there on request. Call and ask; the answer is usually yes.
