Plug in or hardwire the charger? The code changed the answer.

Every quote call in this county eventually hits the same fork in the road. A Level 2 charger can plug into a big 240V outlet, the same style your dryer or range uses, or it can be wired straight into the circuit with no plug at all. For years the outlet was the obvious answer. It was cheaper, you could take the charger with you when you moved, and any electrician could put one in before lunch.

Then Maryland adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code, and the math quietly flipped. On most of the installs we quote in Calvert County now, hardwiring is the cheaper option, and it is usually the better one too. Here is why, in plain terms.

The two ways to feed a charger

The plug route means installing a NEMA 14-50 receptacle, a four prong 50 amp outlet, on a dedicated circuit. Your charger hangs on the wall next to it and plugs in like an appliance. The hardwire route skips the outlet. The electrician runs the circuit into the charger itself and lands the wires on its terminals. Same wire, same breaker panel, same charger in many cases, since most name brand units sell both versions or convert between them.

Ten years ago the outlet won on price almost every time. A receptacle costs a few dollars and the labor is simple. What changed is not the outlet. It is the breaker behind it.

The code wrinkle that flipped the math

The 2023 code, which Maryland uses statewide, requires GFCI protection on 240V receptacles in garages and outdoors. That includes the 14-50 outlet you would plug a charger into. GFCI protection at 50 amps does not come from the outlet like it does in your bathroom. It comes from a special two pole breaker in the panel, and those breakers are not cheap. Depending on the brand of panel in your wall, that one breaker runs from around a hundred dollars to several hundred, against maybe fifteen for the standard breaker a hardwired charger uses.

Hardwired chargers skip the requirement because there is no receptacle. The rule covers outlets, not fixed equipment, and every decent charger already has its own ground fault electronics built in. Which leads to the second problem with the plug route: those two layers of protection do not always get along. The breaker sees the charger’s internal electronics and trips when nothing is actually wrong. The industry calls it nuisance tripping. You call it walking out to a car that never charged. Some charger manuals now tell you outright to hardwire the unit to avoid it.

The cheap outlet problem

There is one more trap on the plug route, and it is the one that shows up in fire investigations. A charger is not a dryer. A dryer pulls hard for forty minutes. A charger pulls 32 or 40 amps continuously for hours, night after night, and the fifteen dollar builder grade receptacle from the big box store was never built for that duty. The contacts loosen, the connection heats up, and the outlet face slowly cooks. We have seen the browned plastic. The fix is an industrial grade receptacle rated for continuous duty, which costs several times as much, and that gap eats most of what the plug route was supposed to save.

That last column matters more than people expect. A plug-in charger on a 50 amp circuit is allowed to draw 40 amps, because the code caps continuous loads at 80 percent of the circuit. Hardwiring is the only path to 48 amps, which is the difference between roughly 30 and 37 miles of range per hour of charging. For anyone in Dunkirk or Owings running the long commute up Route 4 to DC every day, the faster overnight recovery is worth having.

When the plug still makes sense

The outlet is not dead. If you already own a portable charger that came with the car and it terminates in a 14-50 plug, using it is reasonable. If you rent, the outlet stays with the house and the charger leaves with you. And if you expect to move within a couple of years, unplugging beats paying an electrician to disconnect and reinstall. We will quote the outlet route honestly when it fits. It just is not the default anymore, and anyone still pitching it as the automatic cheap option is quoting from an old code book.

Outside installs lean hardwired too

Plenty of homes here have no garage at all, a carport or a driveway pad instead, and around the water the salt air works on every exposed connection. An outdoor receptacle needs a weatherproof in-use cover and still leaves a plug sitting in the weather year round. A hardwired charger with a sealed enclosure rated for outdoor duty is the cleaner install, and it is what we put on most driveway jobs.

Either way, the rebate applies

Maryland’s residential charger rebate pays half the installed cost up to $700 and does not care which route you pick. The outlet, the breaker, the charger, and the labor all count toward it. The funding cycle reopened July 1 and runs dry early every year, so the timing advice in our rebate guide still stands: apply as soon as the job is done.
